Located on Dubai Marina the site has access to a vantage point along the canal giving extensive long distance views of the waterfront precinct.
There are however a number of buildings already clustered in the vicinity and In the context of this forest of closely spaced towers with a predominant language of solidity. The idea for the Dubai Marina tower is about lightness and sanctuary. The development springs from the oasis rather than the sand and floats above the landscape.
For the podium the expression of being grounded has been reinterpreted in terms of something coming up from the earth, with timber, palm trees, water and shade. The timber elements extend out over the water, are fractured into separate storeys to minimize the feeling of height and reach up
to create a buttress-like canopy where the tower comes to ground. The cladding to the Townhouses consists of a series of sliding timber-battened panels alternating with vertical timber louvres. This timber curtain allows for deeper shade to the outdoor spaces and enhances the sense of privacy
and enclosure whilst still opening up to the water views.
Hovering over the landscape base is a light, ethereal Tower enveloped by glass louvre screens. The space between the tower and the screen is occupied by various balconies and outdoor spaces of the apartments behind. A combination of fixed and operable translucent, clear and opaque
panels gives a shaded façade and yet allows the occupants to still see the view. Similarly an Islamic screen wraps up and over the short sides of the tower to protect the interior spaces from the intensity of the outside environment.
By allowing the screens to be free of the main façade air currents are encouraged to move between the apartments and the louvres in the shaded zone. This will reduce the temperature of the in between space and create a more habitable space on the balconies.
