Casco building Donna, Strijp-S
The area of Strijp-S in Eindhoven is unique in every way. The high number of creatives living and working there, the rough character of the industrial built heritage and the way program and challenging new buildings have been added in recent years, makes Strijp-S a place where you want to be, where you can learn, live, work and create.
In this context, De Bever architecten was asked to design a multifunctional building on the site of the temporary parking garage next to the Klokgebouw. The idea of symbolizing the uniqueness and robustness of the area has led to an inviting and sturdy building that through its design, use of materials and structure integrates beautifully between the old and new buildings of Strijp-S.
A double-height entrance with a public loggia above accentuates the welcoming character of the building. The high recessed ground floor gives access to the large open interior. This plinth with large XL windows ensures maximum transparency and view of the Ketelhuisplein. Due to its open character, this building stands out from the surrounding row and acquires a connecting role at the Philitelaan in the heart of Strijp-S.
Use
Thanks to its robust structural dimensioning and generous spatial layout, as well as the transparent façades that allow abundant daylight, the building offers ample interior space and quality. It provides users with maximum freedom to arrange the interior as they wish. As a lot of space can be shared, mutual connection and meetings are stimulated. A large part of the central space in the building can be arranged as needed and has a semi-private, public character. In this part, large open spaces with voids and stairs have been created with a varying view of the city.
The choice was made to keep the concrete structure and installation technology largely visible. The resulting robust appearance of the building underlines its no-nonsense character and unlimited possibilities for use. In this way, the building fits well with the 100-year-old Philips factory buildings, which still prove their usefulness today as they are relatively easy to transform.
Apartments
The top 4 floors are intended for work studios and/or apartments. Here too, the architecture of a robust building skeleton has continued, whereby the appearance leaves a lot of space for the end user. The work studios and apartments have the character of a loft, where the open character of the floor plan and the façade layout gives a lot of freedom with regard to the layout. A separate entrance on the ground floor gives access to the top 4 floors. On the 6th floor a central garden-like furnished joint outdoor space is located, which residents can use together.
