TIME AND EVOLUTION
The property transformed 18th and 19th century architecture and urban planning and was designed by Francisco Almada e Mendonça. Adjoining the Nacional Museum of Soares dos Reis, formerly the old Palace of Carrancas, the property joins two plots in Porto leading to the creation of a building with an exceptional façade on the north elevation. This led to the creation of a series of apartments with vertical access and the bathroom facilities all grouped in a central core. The various levels between the public space and the courtyard creates alternative accesses to the building with different hierarchies. The access for vehicles is created separately from the courtyard which is important for the overall architectural narrative.
The apartments are provided on four floors contiguous with the external façade apart from the upper floors who benefit from additional areas within the ample roof space. There is a fusion between contemporary needs and conservation of the original building with minimal alterations to existing features such as the staircases and the kitchens conserving in time those components that do not require further evolution.
