“An important discovery has been made this century: The Earth is fragile and theenergy we are using is not infinite. The idea of realizing a minimum refuge which can be used for emergencies, workingin a small scale and being self-sufficient and sustainable.A small residential unit using only natural energy sources.Energy is a very important subject today and architecture cannot afford to waste anymore”.Renzo PianoDiogeneDiogenes of Sinope, known as the Cynic, Greek philosopher (born in Sinope 412 AC, deceased in Corinto 323 AC on the same day as Alessandro Magno’s death).Diogene is known as the first person who said “I’m a citizen of the world”.His philosophy is based on the research of human truth and authentic virtue – man existing in a life detached from artifacts. The nickname “Cynic”, which was later commonly used, comes from the word “dog” and the philosopher’s desire of living like one: “The human being has made every gift of God more complicated”.Diogene lived in a barrel and was covered in rags, going around with a lantern preaching: “I’m looking for the man!”.He destroyed his last property, a little wooden pot, when he saw a boy drinking from his hands. He is also known for his anecdote with Alexander the Great: Alexander asked the already famous philosopher which desire he would most like to have fulfilled. His answer was: “Stand a little out of my sun”.The emperor replied: “If I were not Alexander, I would like to be Diogenes”.General features:-TransportabilityWeighing a few tons, it can be easily transported-Self-SufficiencyLow energy consumption and sustainability-ComfortAll you need, wherever you wantBefore getting to the final solution, the minimum housing unit Diogene has been developed with different technologies and layout configuration, defining the spaces and the components in a more and more ergonomic, functional and sustainable way.Diogene adopts an innovative and dynamic construction system that uses wooden panels to realize walls, floors and partitions. The XLAM panel is a product engineered in wood that consists of three layers of boards in cedar wood, mutually intersecting and glued. The structure of the panel obtained by gluing together the intersecting boards offers high performance, full dimensional stability and gives the product a rigidity that makes it suitablefor the most demanding structural uses.Insulated vacuum panels are attached to the shell guaranteeing maximum comfort while using an extremely thin element.Transsolar has developed the necessary technology for Diogene in order to make it self-sufficient. Diogene uses vacuum panels and triple glazed windows for insulation, minimizes the thermalbridges, uses photovoltaic and solar panels, geothermal heat pump, recollects rain water, uses low energy lightings, low-water shower, biological toilet (without water consumption) and natural ventilation.Technical features:•Size :2,50x3mt.•The kitchen has been furnished with storage boxes located in the recess of the partition wall dividing the living and services areas.•The cooking area has also been equipped with hanging aluminum plates for tableware and cutlery.•The toilet is equipped with storage boxes built into the recess of the partition wall dividing the living and services spaces.•The shower plate is made of perforated aluminum and the toilet ventilation is guaranteed by an operable aluminum panel.•Diogene is equipped with a composting toilet, which provides an alternative to flush toilets in areas without water supply or waste treatment facility available.•The sofa bed has been developed as a foldable element with two rows of six thin pillows connected at the vertex. This solution allows easy packaging and saves storage space.•The foldable structure consists of two wooden planks, the seat and back of which can be rotated in order to create a double bed to support the pillows.•The wooden table is divided into three different modules that can be opened according to the needs, allowing different configurations.•They are equipped with a foldable steel profile to support them from below which remains hidden behind the foldable table panel when closed.•Diogene has been developed piece by piece studying functions and needs of the different components.•The living room space has been furnished with lightweight aluminum boxes that can be easily hung on the walls with stainless steel hangers.•The hangers shown in the pictures below, which add to the flexibility of the interior design, recall the Shakers’ philosophy.Client: Vitra GmbHDesign team: Renzo Piano Building WorkshopArch.
