TOPOGRAPHIC FLOWS
In the area of the former Evelpidon School, at the new Dikastiria metro station, the "Topographic Flows" proposal aspires to connect, through an urban park, the new metro station with the entrance to the former Evelpidon School and Protomagia Square, but also with Pedio tou Areos, creating a route with green islands in the city. The proposed new connections of the green belts facilitate the routes of the residents, through the design and functional integration of the study area and its transformation into a new urban garden that contributes to the sustainable development of the city.
The main design idea is departing from the strong topography that characterizes the city of Athens and especially the intervention area. The design vocabulary emerges from this analogy: with the topographical lines as a design tool, the whole area is simulated to a new topography that is emerging from the existing one, which is, anyway, currently highlighted all over the city by the excavations for the metro.
In this way, the "topographical flows" emerge from the subterrain, creating between Evelpidon and Moustoxidi streets a network of paths and openings, while allowing the unhindered circulation of pedestrians in every direction. Throughout the proposal there are rest areas, fast movement routes and tree-lined promenades.
The intervention area is treated as a single proposal with a mild character and is divided into two individual areas with distinct identities between them:
A. The Park in Dikastiria
The area at the metro exit is shaped like a sequence of elevation lines which create steps in one direction and ramps in the other direction, sculpting like this the challenging geometry of the area, as this is defined by Moustoxidi street.
At the northern end, a cobblestone path serves the main entrance to the Evelpidon School. The design continues towards Moustoxidi street and Protomagia Square, and the topographic lines create paths, openings, green islands and rest areas, facilitating access and isolating the area from the traffic noise. The ultimate goal is the creation of an urban park, which is a breath of fresh air for the subway users and the inhabitants of the area alike.
B. The Protomagia Square Glade
Just above the underpass of Moustoxidi street is the Protomagia Square which is being redesigned as a connecting link between the Park in Dikastiria and Pedion tou Areos. Low planting, carefully placed tree rows and light metal structures/canopies for additional shading are introduced in this area.
A special emphasis was placed on environmental design: the maintenance of the existing green of the area, but also the selection of the proposal’s basic ground material, which is a natural earth floor with stabilizers. The choice of such a material for the ground has the purpose of, on one hand, the reduction of thermal loads during the summer months, and on the other, the water absorption in cases of heavy rainfall. In the above way, the proposed intervention is fully incorporated into the urban landscape that welcomes it.
