The program is a 2,400sf renovation of an existing
structure with an addition of 200sf for a new entry volume. We started this
project by investigating opportunities to re-cloak and expand on an existing
building in Plymouth, Michigan to house a new dental office. A new entry
approach ramp, exceeding barrier-free guidelines, gives everyone an opportunity
to move up and towards the new entry volume from the main parking area. Upon
entry into the office, the spaces are bathed in natural daylight from
strategically placed windows as well as Kalwall infill at the east and west
faces, made possible by the unplanned exposure of the historic wood trusses. A
translucent skinned conference area punctuates the main lobby area as a
light-box filtering natural daylight into the center of the building. Skins of
metal, wood, and plexi-glass both conceal and reveal the existing framework of
the structure. Through this game of hide-and-seek, the existing building is re-animated
and represents itself on the site and to the local community.
Our role on this project encompassed all facets: we
were the architects, construction manager, and contractor. We challenged the
notion of shop drawing submittals by developing our own shop drawings and
working directly with the various fabricators. Our involvement on this project
proved to be a valuable learning experience as we developed skills in
translating our drawings into reality, managing multiple trades, resolving
disputes, and, finally, seeing the project unfold.
