Desert Christian High School, located in Tucson Arizona, needed to expand within their existing property, so a new 2 story, 36,000 SF education building was designed and constructed to create a new quad layout for the campus. One major component of the new building is the new multi purpose room. The space was designed to handle many functions, including full court volleyball, half court basketball, and dining space. One side of the room has a retractable theatrical seating, which transforms the ‘athletic’ space into a ‘performance’ space. Opposite of the retractable seating is a raised stage, complete with loading area, back sage space, side stage space, green room, storage and washroom. The intent is the space to provide the high school a new home for weekly chapel services, musical performances, and theatrical performances throughout the school year.
The new AV system for the multi purpose room was designed with Old Pueblo Theatrical Solutions, with acoustic analysis guiding the final speaker design. A JBL CSXLA array was decided on, with durability a key requirement due to hanging in a space that is also used for basketball and volleyball. A new Yamaha TFS 48 channel mixer paired with a Dante system for monitoring is located in the new AV booth perched above the retractable seating, and equipped with a lockable security overhead door to minims ball impact. Lighting was also a challenge, why the robotic theater lights located in the ceiling space where ball impact was a minimum. The overall AV system works with numerous groups throughout the school week in a way that allows for flexibility between each performance and resiliency to the athletic activities in between.
