In 2005, Toronto’s Congregation Darchei Noam purchased a 1960s vintage synagogue on Sheppard Avenue west of Bathurst Street. The original layout of the existing synagogue did not meet the needs of Congregation Darchei Noam.
A contemporary glass and steel second storey addition was incorporated into the original building to create this much needed space. Quadrangle’s design created a new sanctuary, office space, areas for child care, library and board room; integrated a creative structural design to support the addition; a new front entrance flooded by natural light with a grand circular staircase and an artist-designed donor wall with hand-crafted engraved glass panels; and upgraded the finishes to the original building. The building design also included contemporary interpretations of traditional synagogue forms and materials, such as stone and wood.
