The project is invested by the Shenzhen Office of Daqing Municipal People's Government, and is located at the west area of Futian CBD, the heart of Chegongmiao Commercial Circle, and south of Shennan Avenue -- a traffic artery of Shenzhen. It’s a large-scale super high-rise building including commerce, office, hotel and apartments.
Daqing was once a land of wilderness. After rich oil reserves were discovered there, Daqing Oil Field came into being in 1960. After 37 years of development and construction, Daqing has become one of the modern and hi-tech industrial cities in northern China.

As the project was at a prominent location of Shenzhen city, it should be a unique, unforgettable landmark, with an all-round symbolic image. However, the site area was quite limited, so there was not enough space to make an appropriate podium. Since the standard floor areas required by commercial podium at bottom floors, office at middle floors, as well as hotel and apartments at upper floors were decreasing, I decide to integrate the bottom podium and upper floors into one independent structure, with its lower part being bigger and top part smaller. In this way I solved the problem of land shortage; meanwhile, as it happened, the trapezoidal shape of the building, which looked like an oil drilling derrick, also became a powerful symbol for Daqing. Thus, rational analysis and sensual association of design achieved the perfect combination.

For the tower’s trapezoidal shape, based on comprehensive consideration of pictogram, structural stability and economic rationality, I designed the front and back two rows of inclined column with 6 degree angle, and properly controlled the standard floor areas, thus making the building even more upright, tall and steady.

In the treatment of the facade style, taking into account of the historical context of Daqing and derrick’s structural language, I combined the styles of high-tech and Brutalism, making the structural framing exposed, which I saw as a symbolic expression of the simplicity and strength of an industrial city.

For the treatment of the exterior finish, aluminum sheet and glass curtain were adopted to present the modern features of the industrial city.

With further consideration of economic rationality, the architectural body protruded for 6 floors with anti-6-degree angle at an appropriate position of the narrower upper part of trapezoid framework, and in order to echo it the bottom 6 commercial floors contracted inward also with anti-6-degree angle, thus forming a gray space between the wider lower framework and the main entrance, which will help attract visitors. In this way, the tower’s logically reasonable and proportionally moderate retractile body added a little rhythm and dynamic within the simple framework, thus showing the vitality of a modern industrial city.

In the top of the building, the columns of the trapezoidal framework rose out of the roof with a proportionate height and intersected in the ends, groups of lateral cables with suitable spacing connected between the columns, so as to not only enhance the wind stability of high-altitude framework, but also form an upward gray space, together with the standing lightning antennas at the four corners, making the thick and humane tower body be extended, transitional and sky-scraping toward the virtual far and profound heaven, and raising people’s admiration and sublime strong feelings to the remarkable modern industrial technology. Meanwhile the gray space also weakened and covered more subtly the equipment on roof, and green roof can be adopted here to be a sky garden, where people can overlook the vast city of Shenzhen, the unrivaled views of Shenzhen Bay and mangroves natural scenery.
