In January of 2013, the Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design (DFALD) at the University of Toronto St George Campus launched a dramatic makeover to transform this long-neglected icon into a centre for education and research focused on sustainable architecture, landscape, and city-building at One Spadina Crescent. The plan involved an innovative north-facing expansion of the historic building, with a new three-storey complex that serves as a model for environmental and urban design. The new facility features flexible design studios, fabrication spaces, and research laboratories. Planning for the project includes a series of outward-looking pavilions, one of which is the new home of the Global Cities Institute, a new cross-disciplinary research centre. The revitalized building exemplifies sustainable construction, complete with built-in resiliency and the ability to transform over time. It showcases leading sustainable design practices, including rainwater harvesting, daylighting, bicycle parking, and a green roof, built to incorporate photovoltaic technology as it evolves. Made of glass, stone, and steel, the contemporary addition protects views of the historic building and its grand central tower and turrets
