The construction of the cultural center “Tubla da Nives”
The intention of the local government was to turn the hay-barn into a cultural center for the village of Selva Val Gardena. The barn itself will be kept intact and renovated, and will be improved upon by adding an additional building.
The Design:
The essence of our plan was to retain the structure of the barn, and to preserve its character with it. With this in mind it was decided to keep the barn during these improvements, and to use it as the primary building for this project with the broad barn-doors forming the entrance to the center. It was also decided to use glass for the construction of the additional building, allowing the modern glass pavilion to signify the barn's new purpose as a cultural center. The rough stonework of the barn will be a striking contrast to the gleaming glass, symbolizing the use of both traditional methods and modern technology.
This pavilion will intentionally be kept simple so as not to detract from the character of the barn, but rather to serve as a display cabinet allowing a clear view of current affairs in this public piece of infrastructure. With this transparency passers-by should feel involved with the building and feel welcome to visit.
The cultural center will consist essentially of 4 spaces on 2 floors, each of which should have a distinctive atmosphere based on lighting, acoustics, size and the materials used.
Tubla da Nives, not only in the literal center of the village, but also a center for diverse potential events, from music evenings and lectures to displays and exhibitions.
