Context/Program- a full floor office for a spirited not-for-profit in lower Manhattan that takes full advantage of opportunities for light and openness.
The project demanded certain specifics that were not necessarily compatible- an open feeling but with a provision for private interaction, a community sensibility but with allowance for more intimate encounters and exchanges.
The solution was to use the center of the roughly square floor plan as the principal meeting/conference room, but to allow it to be both sub dividable and used as circulation when not in use.
The perimeter on three sides contains the work rooms-offices that are slightly larger and hold groups rather than individuals. Sliding pocket doors and custom fabricated desks/tables make use of every available inch. The entry area is intentionally over sized anticipating events, and leads to a corner screening room and adjacent library.
