ABA’s renovation and expansion of the Crandall Public Library was named the Best Library Construction / Renovation Project by the New York Library Association in 2008. The design creates a social and interactive facility at the center of three communities. Statistics for the two years of operation following the renovation bear witness to the dramatic impact of this project. In the first year of operation, visitation and circulation increased by 50%, and internet use nearly doubled.
The 52,000-square-foot library provides three times more space while preserving historic scale and character. An open floor plan offers flexibility and clear sight lines, with interior partitions used only where privacy was required. Structure and mechanical systems are exposed above suspended wood or acoustic tile ceiling “clouds.” With strong colors and natural and artificial light, these create distinct identities for service areas. The lower level provides a large community room, a lobby gallery, and the Folk Life Archive and Study Center.
