The abandoned city of Craco is a unique historical landmark, where the wellness resort is to be constructed. The main aims of the project are the following:
– to emphasize the landmark and to save the atmosphere of the decaying beautiful place;
– to preserve existing buildings and ruins;
– to design new volumes that will not conflict with the main volume of the city.
Based on these principles, we create clear forms made of simple materials and with concise functions. They do not take the main focus from the historical site but enhance the visitors` experience. The main functional zones are the service center, the path of Craco`s history, shelter units, comfort units, and the exhibition space.
Service Center
The arcade meets visitors and enframes the astonishing landscape, viewed from the public space, that connects the wellness center, the restaurant, and the info point.
It was the clay slide that destroyed the buildings in the old city. Taking into account this historically important material, we proposed to make the clay the basis of the new part of the city. Hence, the main materials of the new service center are clay-colored concrete, steel, and glass.
The new building of the info point/library is the glass box embedded in the perimeter of the ruins. One of the old walls is used as a part of the interior. Buildings of the wellness center and restaurants are two simple forms made of clay-colored concrete and glass and combined into a one-terraced composition.
The path of Graco's history
The Path of Craco`s history is the main road stretching all over the ancient city. Arches with info screens on their sides guide the visitors along the way and help them learn more about Craco`s history. The path finishes with the ancient tower on the top of the city, where visitors would enjoy the panoramic view.
Comfort units
Spacious units provide a great level of comfort. Their shape is oblong so that visitors can observe magnificent views from every point. Located on the rocky side of the city, units are designed to be hidden from the eyes of travelers.
Shelter units
Among the ruins of the ancient city, there are personal shelters in a simple shape of a tent. To make these shelters even more invisible, reflective surfaces are used as main materials. The material of the roof varies from solid to transparent, depending on the existing surrounding walls.
