100-room contemporary tropical hotel located on the island of Ukulhas in Alif Alif Atoll, Maldives. The project demands an architecture that harmonizes with the fragile local ecosystem while maximizing luxury guest comfort through advanced climate-responsive strategies. The aesthetic identity strikes a delicate balance between modern, grid-based structural lines and a warm, organic material palette that reflects the surrounding island environment.
The building envelope is engineered to combat the tropical climate using passive design principles. Deeply recessed, large private balconies extend from every guest room to serve as outdoor living rooms while creating natural overhangs that shade the floor-to-ceiling glass facades below. To mitigate solar heat gain, a structured system of vertical timber-look shading screens runs across the main facade, filtering intense sunlight without obstructing panoramic views. Furthermore, a multi-story open atrium void is sliced into the center of the building structure, promoting vertical landscaping and enhancing natural cross-ventilation through the core of the property.
The spatial program prioritizes seamless transitions between indoor and outdoor island living across all guest touchpoints. Upon arrival, guests are welcomed into an open-air, high-ceiling reception area designed to capture refreshing sea breezes through a palette of natural stone and warm wood finishes. The ground level also integrates cool, semi-outdoor cafe spaces nested within a lush perimeter of tropical landscaping that acts as a natural buffer from the outside world. The upper levels house the 100 guest keys, all optimized for privacy and oriented toward either the island's interior greenery or the surrounding ocean.
The crown jewel of the development is the rooftop recreation deck, engineered to maximize the stunning Maldivian horizon. A premium infinity-edge pool stretches across the western edge of the roof, giving guests an unobstructed, frontline view of the daily sunset. Flanking the pool is a sophisticated lounging and sun deck area complete with shaded cabanas, comfortable seating, and a rooftop bar. Underpinning the entire design is a commitment to sustainability, incorporating passive cooling techniques, rainwater harvesting systems for landscape irrigation, and structural provisions for solar energy integration.
