3 DISTINCTIONS Following the great fires of August 2007 and the destruction of many houses, and in some cases entire villages, the Hellenic Republic along with the association of Hellenic companies and architectural practices organized a competition for prototype single housing projects. The whole plot is organized and suspended around two stone walls, forming a cross and covers an area of about 65 sq.m. The cross, built by the remains of the burnt houses (stone, wood and marble) symbolizes the hope for a better future and stands as a reminder of the great disaster that struck the area. Positioned at the North, the main entrance of the structure is protected by a wind barrier, while all the walls at the north facade have double thickness and small openings for better insulation and less energy losses.
