Situated in a burgeoning commercial sector of Maros, a suburban township adjacent to Makassar, Indonesia. this three story project takes full advantage of its low density surroundings to weave the nearby natural landscape directly into its spatial design. Designed primarily as a hub for social interaction and productivity, each floor fulfills a unique functional role while maintaining a cohesive civic atmosphere.
The architectural narrative is anchored by a top-floor open-air garden oriented toward Bukit Cenrana, a prominent regional landmark. By lifting the viewing platform above the neighboring roofs, the design frames uninterrupted vistas of the hill, elevating the local geography from a simple backdrop to a central element of the visitor experience.
Regional identity is strongly emphasized through locally sourced materials and native craftsmanship. Mountain-harvested andesite stone dominates the interior, featuring prominently on the walls, floors, and coffee counter through a geometric square grid. On the second level which houses a quiet co-working environment and private meeting rooms the interior extends onto an outdoor terrace clad in locally fired terracotta bricks. A lush moss wall, cultivated and installed by nearby artisans, adds a tactile green feature intended to enhance user well being.
Environmental performance and material expression intersect along the facade, where a perforated breeze block screen filters harsh morning light while drawing cool breezes off the surrounding hills directly through the terrace. This passive cooling strategy extends upward to the rooftop terrace, a flexible platform intended for community gatherings, small exhibitions, and quiet retreat.
By pairing climate-responsive strategies with a contemporary interpretation of native materials, the structure responds directly to the microclimate and heritage of Maros. As the area continues to urbanize, the project serves as a model for contextual design offering modern communal spaces that remain deeply tied to their local context.
