Along the ever-expanding urban axis of Hangzhou, the project settles with quiet composure and restraint. Positioned between urban bustle and calm, it creates a gentle threshold where one can gradually shift from the city into a more private rhythm of life. Rather than declaring boundaries through rigid divisions, the space guides perception inward through a sequence of layered interfaces. Here, life is not overly defined; instead, it always leaves room to breathe.
Rather than simply juxtaposing functions, the layout is organized along two circulation routes—above ground and below—unfolding different scenes of everyday life in sequence. Pathways, water features, and shifting sightlines connect the areas seamlessly, creating a calm and measured spatial rhythm.
Explicit Order
In the entrance lobby, a composed and restrained axis draws the gaze inward. Dark stone sets the tone, while wood veneers introduce warmth in gradual layers. Soft ceiling light diffuses like a drawn veil, naturally slowing visitors’ pace. Set deeper within the space, the reception counter forms the first subtle threshold, guiding movement in the shifting interplay of light and material.
Passing through the foyer, the rhythm of the axis softens in the lobby lounge. A rounded bar counter stands at the center, inviting moments of gentle pause. The lustrous green stone countertop, paired with the floating lights above, creates a gentle visual dialogue. A sequence of arched openings draws the stone landscape indoors, setting solid and void in subtle balance.
Beyond the lobby bar, the sunken area establishes a more immediate connection with the central water courtyard. Elevation changes are softened by continuous steps, low seating, and subtle shifts in flooring texture, creating a fluid transition along the circulation. Light filters through a suspended fish-scale metal screen, unfolding across the space in delicate, rhythmic layers. Floor-to-ceiling glazing frames views of the courtyard, strengthening the dialogue between interior and exterior while maintaining a measured sense of distance.
Water acts as a subtle mediator in the public areas, subtly modulating scale and rhythm along the spatial journey. The residents’ lounge, set beside the central water feature, extends toward the courtyard through a transparent glass facade. The low-profile bookshelf, curved sofa, and round table soften directional cues, letting the circulation ease into a spontaneous moment of pause.
The adjacent gym echoes the courtyard in its own way. Fitness equipment lines the windows while the center remains open. Linear lighting traces the ceiling, visually elongating the spatial proportions. Here, exercise finds its rhythm against the quiet backdrop of nature.
The elevator hall facilitates the spatial transition in a more restrained manner. With its lowered proportions, attention gently shifts from the scene to oneself. Subtle variations in materiality and a restrained composition bring quiet calm to the moment of waiting.
Implicit Layers
Passing through the underground entrance area, the space suddenly opens up after a subtle turn, revealing the foyer in full view. A low-hanging circular pendant light anchors the space, creating a visual focal point. Rather than seeking dramatic contrasts, the materials reveal a gradual progression of texture and tone.
The corridor linking the underground foyer to the main functional areas also acts as a buffer after the stair descent, forming a clearly defined passage of transition. A vaulted ceiling stretches overhead, its repeated rhythm gradually reinforcing a sense of direction and drawing the gaze forward.
At the end of the corridor, the model display is positioned for viewing from all sides. Rocks and plants beyond the window come into sight, while the sunken yard becomes a real counterpart to the model—shifting perception toward a more direct, holistic understanding of the site.
The water bar counter is clad in natural stone, its rounded edges softening the volume. Behind it, a cabinet composed of metal and mirrored layers forms a quiet backdrop, where objects are arranged in subtle order. Between display and pause, the space holds a measured rhythm.
The negotiation area unfolds along one side of the courtyard, with seating arranged loosely to support independent and private conversations. The outdoor scenery stays quietly in the background, never dominating. Within this calm and steady atmosphere, thoughts settle gently and decision emerge with ease.
The private banquet hall is set in a quieter area of the underground level. Centered around a round table, the space establishes a clear sense of enclosure that concentrates interaction. Walls and furnishings feature soft textures, exuding refined elegance. Through the full-height glass facing the sunken yard, the rough stone features outside contrast with the interior’s delicate textures, offering a brief moment of visual release.
At the end of the circulation, the outdoor lounge beside the courtyard is left intentionally undefined—a gentle pause in the spatial sequence.
The project does not define spatial hierarchy through rigid partitions. Instead, a series of gradual and continuous transitions soften the boundaries. Between movement, descent, and pause, the space is no longer divided strictly by function; it yields to perception and everyday life. As boundaries soften, life gains room to expand—unhurried and unconstrained.
