Imagine the city in 2108...
• By 2108, there will be 10 Billion people in the world
• Yet in 2008, 80% of the land that is suitable for raising crops is in use
• By the year 2050, nearly 80% of the world’s population will reside in urban centers.
• How will we feed ourselves?
In 2108 San Francisco will stand as a model sustainable city, where agriculture is woven directly into the urban framework. Vertical agricultural systems, fed by reclaimed water, and powered through renewable energy technologies, will be deployed throughout the region. Through the appropriation of existing structures, and the development of new agricultural centers, along key nodes of an area-wide transportation network, we will begin to cultivate an urban environment that is linked directly to its food supply. In this environment, food can be produced and distributed in a highly efficient manner, eliminating the costly environmental effects of previous industrial agricultural models, and providing a new base of industry in an increasingly dense and stratified urban environment.
