Ford Powell & Carson, together with Pfluger Wiginton Hooker Architects and Madeline Anz Slay Architecture, was selected as the design team for San Antonio’s new public safety headquarters. The 220,000 square foot administration building will consolidate the administrative functions of the city’s police and fire departments.
The administration building and its adjacent parking garage will anchor the west side of Santa Rosa Boulevard, a major downtown thoroughfare. The east side of the boulevard will be the site of San Antonio’s new federal courthouse, forming a new downtown government center.
The team was responsible for development of Bridging Documents which are being completed by a Design-Build team. The project was Awarded LEED Silver and includes high-efficiency HVAC, daylighting, sunshades and condensate collection from mechanical systems which will be recycled for irrigation. The administration building will be clad in locally produced materials, including limestone and brick which also appear on the base of the garage.
A central light court will supplement perimeter day-lighting and act as a unifying circulation space bringing literal openness to the functions of the police department. The project also includes a fueling and wash station for city vehicles located on another site. The parking garage includes priority parking for hybrid and fuel efficient vehicles, as well as charging stations for electric cars and trucks.
