Rotterdam’s city hall is of a high monumental value. An extensive research preceded the extension of the building. The findings showed a need for a greater accessibility for disabled people and the transformation of the attic into a restaurant or a meeting space. Apart from that, the research showed a need for improvement to the elevators, which were now too small for internal transportation. The design was developed in collaboration with interior architects Merks & Girod in Amsterdam and restoration architect office Fritz in Bussum. The Masterplan was designed by Harry Abels. The design introduced a lift shaft to the existing structure and the attic was transformed into a restaurant and several multifunctional spaces. Cubicles in archetypical house shapes, for study and meetings, were also created on the attic and several changes were made to the interior of the building.
