The Western Academy of Beijing (WAB), a leading international school in China, approached the architects to renovate their elementary school library, heart of its campus.
The space required a significant update not only to refresh its design but also to transform it into a dynamic educational hub, aligning with the school’s philosophy that every area should serve as a learning spacey.
Inspired by children’s tales from around the world, the renovation’s central theme was to convert the library into a space reminiscent of a fairy tale.
The open space was segmented into themed areas with custom bookshelves that both accommodated the library’s collection and enhanced the storytelling experience. Key highlights include a bamboo forest platform, a Tibetan tower that opens into a storytelling nook, and a village-themed area completed with a small hut and a cave, designed for bigger classes and social gatherings.
The design incorporates round, modular bookshelves to create learning zones and a color scheme that reflects the soft hues of traditional Chinese temples, harmonizing with the school’s vibrant aesthetics.
Interactive and magical elements like periscopes, whispering tubes and hidden rainbow-creating crystals add a layer of enchantment, immersing students in their educational journey.
Aiming to foster a passion for reading and storytelling, the team created an environment where learning blends with creativity and imagination.
