CHIA MESA proposes to renew the failing economic and urban model of the strip mall by adding a 3.5 acre hydroponic farm that wraps its top and sides, to give it a unique exterior identity and interior ambience that will transform it into a bonafide urban landmark and destination. Occupying a zone varying between three and nine feet in thickness, the farm is comprised of water-fed plant trays and ¬¬attendant service walkways covered by operable polycarbonate louvers. Three stories of additional rentable space and parking are accessed by means of bridges that span across a pedestrian “gorge” from one to the other. Meanwhile, the all-important visual presence of businesses from the boulevard is built into the design of the north and west faces of the project, where the farm’s polycarbonate screen is indented with ”cliff-selling”: signage that identifies the tenants behind. A drive-thru biodiesel station, in the repurposed existing stand-alone building, offers a direct link between the farm and the consumer. CHIA MESA brings life to the defunct strip mall, literally and figuratively.
