The concept for this project was to create a dramatic and memorable symbol for the Boathouse District that ties the boathouses, the park, and the spirit of the sport together. The goal was to build a state-of-the-art tower that met FISA International Standards and would be a recognizable place for celebration, with a finish-line “wire” that becomes an architectural element.
Interior glass glare reduction for daytime use was resolved with the use of slightly
shaped glass while sloped glass and special lighting was used for glare reduction during night racing. Other design considerations included: jury visibility to racing lanes, under-building space for spectators, a mirror wall that pulls light into the space for transparency, and a finish line LED marker.
