A renovation of an apartment for a young family located in a former factory building in Chelsea. Although the residence is on the top floor, the exposures face adjacent buildings, compromising natural light into the unit. By focusing on creating a stair that serves as a vertical living space, a source of light, and a focal point to a large open living/dining/kitchen space, we were able to bring significantly more light into the apartment while simultaneously creating additional storage, a reading nook, and a study loft. Mechanical lighting and continuous glass clerestory provide additional light to the living areas and into the bedrooms.
During the construction and fabrication of the stair, the pieces cut out to create the perforated "light map" pattern on the guardrail were collected, cleaned, drilled, silver-leafed and hung together to create "Silver Lining", a fixture that hangs at the base of the stair, above the dining table.
