With a total building area of 223,753㎡, CHANG'AN MILLS is located in the mid-point of the Qunming Lake and Xiuchi of Shougang Park, western Beijing, which has earned international fame for serving the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games. As a comprehensive heritage reuse project integrating commercial, office and leisure, it has become an extremely dynamic business and leisure area in western Beijing, marking Shougang's transformation from "sports plus" to "city plus" in the post-Olympic era.
In the urban design of the north area of Shougang Park, the Winter Sports Training Center - General Administration of Sport of China is a central spatial anchor in the core building complex on the west side. Surrounded by the Center, the six sections of planning have enriched the content of the area to the north of Qunming Lake. Its planning and positioning focus on the supporting facilities of sports plates, with functions including recreation, office, commerce and leisure. The six sections are arranged in a U-shape and embedded in the center community of the Center, realizing the harmony of morphological organization and functional allocation in terms of spatial architecture, as well as the transformation from serving a small range of professional athletes to sport amateurs and surrounding residents in the post-Olympic era.
The central site area has a belt-shaped open space with rich greens running from north to south, just like a "green ridge" connecting the two lakes area. Serving as the main axis, the "green ridge" is supplemented by three east-west sight corridors and two north-south walking axes, forming a trunk road connecting surrounding space. In the space, the blocks and important unit all open to the green ridge, echoing the activities with it, which spreads through axes and sight corridors, and interweaves an abundant thermal network for public activities.
The commercial complex stands at the intersection of the waterfront axis and the commercial axis. No. 2 Pump Station is one of the longest-preserved industrial relics in Shougang Park, with its biggest characteristic wooden roof trusses. The team selects polymer materials to conduct grouting reinforcement, so as to solve problems such as internal decay and hollowing of the existing wood components; and replaces the seriously damaged ones. By doing this, it basically presents the structural form of the wooden roof truss in an original way, positioning as an entrance and the most attractive check-in spot during festivals and celebrations. Referring to the 7000 Ventilator Room on the north side of pump station, architects adopt the measure to strengthen new structural columns by internal testing and stacking, which has well maintained the original style, internal wind-resistant columns and overhead crane beams, creating an impressive hardcore industrial-inspired space.
On the basis of renovating and protecting industrial heritage buildings, architects tries to extend new volumes with multi-level landscape. The north square is mainly used for people's flowing and gathering, where circular planting ponds is designed to extend the texture of adjacent plots - Cooling Tower and Sedimentation Tank, and create an outdoor short break space. Different forms of semi-transparent boxes are scattered in the space, for flexible uses of retail, catering and leisure spaces, providing the availability of shared areas.
