Located between Barcelona and Badalona in Sant Adrià de Besòs, the Tres Xemeneies project transforms a decommissioned 1970s power plant into the heart of new Catalunya Media City, a new hub for digital culture promoted by Generalitat de Catalunya. The winning proposal by Marvel and GdSB preserves and takes advantage of the iconic industrial heritage while activating the building with a light and reconfigurable intervention that brings life to the concrete interior, while vegetation permeates the space. A new timber volume extends the original structure with a translucent façade and LED surface. This lighter and sustainable addition symbolizes both the site’s digital future and a more conscious approach to construction, including 4,500 sqm of solar panels on the roof of the complex. The new program layout, organized vertically around three educational and innovation hubs, enhances public access through strategic cuts and rooftop promenades. The permeable interior spaces become places for leisure, interaction, and gatherings. The north facade of the Turbine hall opens a balcony that overlooks the Maresme coastline while the new digital end faces Barcelona to the south The project proposes significant urban accessibility improvements, promoting the connection between Barcelona, Sant Adrià de Besòs, and Badalona and enabling better access to the surrounding environment and beach for both new visitors and users, as well as residents of the nearby neighborhoods. The project merges industrial heritage with forward-looking uses, creating a dynamic space for media arts and technology rooted in the local context with global reach.
