The new space includes open office benching, movable furniture, vintage signage and a custom mural created by famed Austin street artist Federico Archuleta.
Built-in 1964, Castle Park High School features a traditional California single-story “finger” plan with a mid-century modern aesthetic. The campus, located three miles east of San Diego Bay, includes a central quad near the Student Union, Administration, and Library, offering bay and ocean views with a consistent on-shore breeze. The project replaces two original buildings and a modular toilet room with a new structure fronting the central quad. The existing 448kW (DC) photovoltaic system meets building code requirements, but additional energy storage for 15 kW of prorated PV generation is needed. The building houses ten standard classrooms, an art classroom with an outdoor yard, two special education classrooms with a hygiene suite, an ASB workroom, offices, a student store, and a counseling center for accessibility. The central quad is reconstructed with artificial turf, an outdoor stage, group seating areas, dining seating, shade structures, a “Senior Lawn,” and a Special Education area.
