Located in Yucatán Country Club, a private residential neighborhood a few miles north of Mérida, CASA OM is a private house in which natural light is protagonist throughout the day in the façade volumes, which were designed to create playfulness between light and shadow. The suspended volume at the entrance provides privacy to social spaces on the lower level, and protects them from excessive sunlight and heat. It is a metallic structure covered with semi triangular concrete pieces, designed and made in situ; it represents the texture and fibers of the henequen fabric, part of our culture and history. On its inside, there is a living wall covered with plants from the region. This volume creates an exterior vestibule right at the main entrance. The residence’s fifth façade is a green roof, where we integrated an artisanal tub with chucúm, a regional covering made out of tree resins combined with cement and really small pieces of limestone. The house is located on the limits of the neighborhood, making it possible to observe the jungle from the rooftop. The access is from a family room on the first level, through a sculptural staircase made out of steel and aluminum, located over a swimming pool. Both elements and their strategic location make reference to the cavern stalactites and cenotes, or sinkholes, characteristic elements of our state, Yucatán.
