The project involves the construction of a contemporary loft by Amir Hossein Afzali Architects, located adjacent to an ancient Tuscan farmhouse. The project stems from the desire to establish a harmonious dialogue between the existing architecture and the new construction, respecting the proportions, materials, and traditional construction language.
From a volumetric perspective, the shape of the new building echoes that of the original farmhouse, reinterpreting its typological characteristics with a contemporary twist. The essential lines, the solid-empty relationships, and the arrangement of the openings are inspired by the historic building, maintaining a balance between continuity and innovation.
Regarding materials, the choice fell on the use of terracotta latticework exterior walls, a typical element of Tuscan rural architecture. This solution not only gives the loft a look consistent with its surroundings, but also serves a climate function, allowing natural ventilation and filtering sunlight in a soft, diffused way.
The terracotta trellis thus becomes the link between old and new: a traditional material reinterpreted with a modern twist, visually and symbolically linking the loft to the existing farmhouse.
The project as a whole is thus an example of material and cultural continuity, where contemporary language dialogues with the building heritage of the site, respecting its identity without sacrificing architectural innovation.
The new volume maintains the simple, compact lines typical of rural buildings, with a simple, flat roof and a balanced ratio of solids and voids.
The floor plan follows the layout of the farmhouse, ensuring visual and compositional continuity between the two structures.
The orientation and distribution of the openings are designed to optimize natural light and promote cross-ventilation.
The defining element of the project is the terracotta trellis exterior walls, inspired by traditional Tuscan latticework.
The handmade solid clay bricks, measuring 25x12x5.5 cm, are laid staggered and spaced according to a regular pattern, creating an effect of controlled transparency
