This project is located on a site, with an area of around 1000sqm, in Ciudad Colón, San José, Condominio Cerro Colón.
The project meets the needs of a family of 5 members attracted by the qualities of the site in relation to climate, scenic beauty, panoramic visuals to the northwest and the tranquility of the context. The program of the house consists in four bedrooms, a social area, a family room and a small office, service area in the first floor and a central patio.
The terrain is sharply inclined and has the particular configuration of being very long and narrow. However, the fact that is facing north allows it to receive optimal solar exposure and to enjoy the panoramic view of the site.
For reasons of functionality and integration, it was opted to organize the main entrance and the garage based on the street where car transit was possible (the lower part of the lot). Its fragmentation, necessary due to the steep topography, transforms the whole into a composition of small linked and interconnected volumes, creating an unevenness that allows for a more rational and optimized use of the lot. In this way the house’s various functions are clarified with each elevation corresponding to a particular area for the family. The roof follows this arrangement by falling from the top in a continuous way.
With those considerations in mind, the volumes are integrated by a continuous and linear staircase witch adapts geometrically as you ascend, changing its materiality as the area in which it is located, and changing its scale to emphasize its connective role. The form resulting from a rigorous, modular geometric abstraction establishes the necessary separation between modules to adapt to the natural morphology of the terrain, respecting the distance from neighboring regulation walls, thus appearing to sit naturally on the terrain. The result of those strategies is a central sloped courtyard that also acts as a center stage in the daily dynamics of use. Different areas look to it while allows new routes to connect spaces.
