The development involved the creation of the new Millwall Fire Station as the centre piece in a project which integrated 185 residential apartments including social housing, as well as A3 retail space at ground level. The affordable housing is contained in six buildings, between 4 and 9 storeys plus basements, each designed to respond to its urban setting. The housing is formed around a central courtyard, offering a safe and secure space for residents. It houses a fire practice tower at one end where service staff practice life -saving techniques, bringing an element of theatre to the central space.
The scheme relates to and provides views to and from the River Thames and Canary Wharf. The largest building of the scheme is designed to be strongly conceptual and elegant, and takes a 'prow' form gesturing towards the river whilst maximising views. The project is considered by many to represent the highest standards of imaginative and innovative design and procurement. These qualities are achieved at many levels in the ideology of the project, and the architecture itself only serves to visually portray the ambition which the project represents on a wider socio-political scale.
We understand our design has led the fire service to re-consider its future role in many aspects of its development of new operational policies, as a good neighbour within the community.
