Campus F Hagastaden

STATUS
Concept
Competition proposals in Life Sciences.

CampusF is the result of our contribution to the invited parallel architectural assignment for a new building in Kv 39 in Västra Hagastaden, Stockholm. The assignment was to study and design a building with architectural excellence that will house future offices for Life Science, talent housing and public activities in the form of a social living room. In addition to Kanozi Arkitekter, the Danish offices Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects and 3XN were invited to the competition where SHL won the first prize.

The social gallery will be the backbone of the project and essential to the success of CampusF. The term Cardo can be found in Roman urban planning—so it was called the main street heading north to south. The second main street, in the east to west direction, was then called Decumanus Maximus. At the intersection of the two you could find the city square, the Forum. In Latin, cardo also means hinge. Both of these meanings fit very well in a project that will act as the city’s pivotal center and take care of an important movement in the southern corner of the Science City loop.

As a clear conclusion of Hagastaden in the west, the cornerstone is at the front. The building's design should tell us that it is a definitive and final piece of the puzzle—a building designed to stand at the front without a continuation. The facade design of the north side is adapted to be experienced from a distance and in motion. Linear folds in the ground floors and in the penthouse give the volume management a driving movement that follows and reinforces the curve of the historic city front. The warm evening light is captured in the three different directions of the northern facade, and the warm brick tones become a link to the variegated city fronts in Stockholm. The project is built with the fundamental idea of deliberately intersecting and intertwining flows. The DNA strand and its double/triple helix acted as an inspiration and positive design force for our work. In the planning, this is expressed in the design of the meeting stairs and the rooms surrounding them. The glass roofs as skylight also connect in the same form. The building has an obvious center node where the inner space narrows and concentrates on the Experience Lab's exhibition area.
