Café Éclair is an innovative café / micro-bookstore concept located in the Mile End neighborhood. The initial intention was to create an almost residential atmosphere; to blur the lines between café and bookstore, between customer area and service area, in a way that visitors would feel as though they were at a friend’s house.
The first strategy was to organize the space around a large, rounded island. Its central position, alogn with the stools arrangement around it create a sense of equality between the different users.
A three-dimensional shelving unit extending across the ceiling unifies the space, functioning as a library on one side and a coffee display on the other. When entering the café, a large banquette welcomes customers and encourages a sense of camaraderie.
The rigidity of the shelving grid contrasts with the softness of its cream color, as well as with the forest-green velvet of the banquette and the rich texture of the terrazzo countertops.
