The new, 98,600 square foot North Hall and Library at Bronx Community College houses a new library as well as classrooms and meeting rooms. The LEED Silver certified building is designed to blend in with the school’s Stanford White campus. The lighting design of this building celebrates its classical architecture—particularly its grand, double-vaulted, double-height main reading room—while remaining energy-efficient and maintenance-friendly. The project is the winner of an IES Illumination Award.
Throughout the building this approach creates an environment that is inviting, functional and practical. The lighting design is essential in creating an inspirational and dynamic facility to serve the College’s historically disadvantaged student body. The project is an excellent example of the major role that lighting plays in the built environment, to engender pride in the communities that these environments serve.
