The Welcome Hut was conceived in early 2010 as a stand-in for the Welcome Centre to orientate visitors to Evergreen Brickworks. Its long term purpose is to serve as a needed shelter within the largely exterior landscape of the site. In keeping with the mandate for the Brickworks to be a leading example of sustainability in action, it was designed to showcase proven and experimental approaches to green design.
The Welcome Hut weaves together reclaimed materials (slate panels, a graffiti door, light fixtures and electrical panel boxes are salvaged artifacts from the Brickworks site) within a modified shipping container. The Welcome Hut incorporates sustainable technologies: the exterior light over the ‘Welcome Sign’ is powered by photovoltaics on the roof and a Photo Cell sensor automatically turns the light on and off depending on natural light levels. Rainwater is collected on the roof and stored in a salvaged rain barrel from the site to be used for watering the plants at the adjacent Garden Centre.
