Water and fire: a new firehouse for Bergen op Zoom.
The new firehouse of Bergen op Zoom in the Netherlands is designed by Schaap en Sturm Architecten.
The firehouse is situated there where the waves have hit the city wall in former times. In the architecture of the building, this is visible in the shape of the roof particularly, which is designed as waves rolling in, wave upon wave, all in an abstract form. These waves express the dynamism of the fire brigade on one hand, and at the same time the waves give form to the history of the place.
The façade and the roof of the depot can be interpreted as one, as the wave started at Havenplein and literally hanging over the aligning of the Van Konijnenburgweg on the other side. Under the waves, the firehouse has a glass façade, creating a pleasant working environment for the firemen. The glass façade is a display window for the fire trucks and makes clear what happens in the building.
A historical fire truck is on display in the entrance hall, visible from Havenplein. The stairs, which started at the entrance to the upper floors, are diagonally aligned, such that the historical car still is visible of every floor.
The firehouse has a ingenious floorplan, developed under the slogan: 'turning wheels within a minute!.' The floorplan exists of two parts functionally, the depot and a facility building, partly built over the exercise area.
The firehouse is the first building of the new district "Scheldevesting" in Bergen op Zoom. The building is a markingpoint for the new district and therefore a landmark for the city of Bergen op Zoom.
