ABA’s campus master plan led to revitalization of Bowdoin College’s main library. The original 1965 building, a four-story Modernist structure, presented many aesthetic and technical challenges. ABA’s design reinforced the College’s commitment to a dynamic, technologically advanced, and welcoming library environment for students, faculty, and staff.
A new reception and exhibit area welcomes patrons and provides clear wayfinding. New circulation and reference desks allow library staff to be more visible and accessible, while new reading spaces provide a variety of seating options throughout the building.
The library’s distinguished Department of Special Collections and Archives was also renovated with new environmentally controlled reading and exhibit spaces.
