Boardwalking is a master plan for an area of Sion, capital and economic centre of the Valais region. The city is situated along a major railway line between Switzerland and Italy, and constitutes a major node for regional bus routes. The station area, was defined as site for EUROPAN 9. Today, there is a crucial lack of physical connection between the station district and the city centre, and the space between the two lacks program. This programmatic void strengthens the impression of the station area as a barrier between the South and North side of the city. Additonally, the lack of distinction between the railway station square and the bus terminal creates a chaotic and non-welcomming first impression of the city. We propose to reorganize the traffic in the area, and to replace the station building and square with a 250 meter station boardwalk, constituting the new face of Sion. The program of the the station building is spread out along the boardwalk, and merged with the new station district. From the boardwalk, citizens, commuters and tourist are guided through the new district and into the city centre. The main theme of EUROPAN 9 was Sustainable cities and new public space. Boardwalking focuses on bicyclists and pedestrians, and aims at easing their access to the city. The competition area's central location in the city, combined with a high demand for housing, and the immediate proximity to train and bus makes this a natural high density focus area. A combination of high density and a high number of travellers creates the basis for a vibrant district, with a multitude of programs - securing the economic sustainablility of the project. Boardwalking was awarded 1st prize in Europan9 i 2008. The project is made by Ivar Lyngner and Eli Grønn. We are curently working on a zoning plan for the area, assigned by the municipality of Sion.
