A SPACE ABOUT designs Bloss Barcelona, an urban temple for wellness and hair care
The Barcelona-based interior and product design studio founded by Laura Blanch and Noa Massanet has redesigned the new Bloss Barcelona center. A SPACE ABOUT has focused on natural tones - clay and earth - to create a warm and relaxing space. Founded in 2020, the firm has completed more than 19 projects in Spain and Portugal and is currently working on projects for the United States.
A SPACE ABOUT, the Barcelona-based interior and product design studio founded by Laura Blanch and Noa Massanet, has led the renovation of Bloss Barcelona, formerly known as Hair by Sergio. The prestigious hairdressing firm opened its doors in May 2021 in the heart of Barcelona’s Eixample district and has become an icon of hair care at the national level.
Bloss Barcelona is a contemporary and minimalist space that reflects Mediterranean culture with elements unique to the city, such as the volta catalana or ceramic tiles. “The feeling of returning to our roots through the purity of materials, the beauty of simplicity, and the quality of detail, expresses at a glance the values of a space dedicated to personal care, and in this case, hair care at its best,” emphasize the founders of the studio. “We wanted to emphasize the brand’s values and excellence by creating a unique, elegant, relaxing, and comfortable space, an oasis for hair care,” they add.
To define the project’s color palette, A SPACE ABOUT has sought to recover the tones of the materials originally used for dyeing: clays and earths, and thus create the common thread of a warm and minimalist design where textures and natural and eco-friendly materials are the starting point to respect the environment and contribute to a healthier life, just like the hair treatments offered at Bloss Barcelona, which specializes in natural keratin treatments with its partner Goa Organics.
BESPOKE FURNITURE, CAREFULLY CRAFTED DETAILS
Curved walls and furniture, arches that make the transition into the interior space more welcoming, oval mirrors and curtains that create sinuous walls, are some of the elements that provide visual comfort to the atmosphere, along with the use of a sound-absorbing material for the ceiling that can reduce the noise from hair dryers and improve acoustics.
The rounded shapes that characterize both the space and the custom-designed furniture, subtle materials, and a neutral and natural-toned color palette characterize the design that adheres to the current Japandi trend: a blend of Japanese Zen harmony, minimalism, and the warmth of Scandinavian style.
For the lighting project of the space, A SPACE ABOUT has enhanced the spa effect by using hidden LEDs and indirect lighting to promote relaxation and disconnection for clients. Additionally, the direct light from the ceiling allows professionals to work with hair dye colors perfectly.
REMODELING AND ARCHITECTURAL ELEMENTS
Architecturally, the challenges in the new adaptation of the existing space have been mainly optimizing the 140 square meters to create a free movement space without architectural barriers for a large staff, with a functional and aesthetic floor plan.
The headwash área has been differentiated through a change of color, materials, and lighting, creating a ‘space within a space’ characterized by a mat finish paint in brown tones, curtains, and earth-colored tiles.
In addition, the space has new elegant areas for bathrooms and wardrobe, while the entrance is distinguished by a pure white environment, anticipating the treatment space while also promoting disconnection from the noise and bustle of the street. This remodeling has succeeded in conveying calmness and disconnection to clients, focusing attention on themselves and accompanying the immersion in the enjoyment of the hair care concept.
