The existing office building of Viereck Architekten in Graz has been expanded with a monolithic structure that complements the 2009 building in both aesthetic and functional harmony, creating a balanced architectural ensemble.
The new addition follows a minimalist, contemporary design that combines high functionality with refined elegance. Large glass panels generate character for the building and flood the interiors with natural light, while the glazed atrium between old and new structures creates a seamless connection. The facade made of aluminum composite panels suggests a modern, timeless appearance. Both structures are constructed using timber, supporting sustainable building practices. The ensemble integrates harmoniously into its urban surroundings: through its thoughtful alignment along the street, it fills an existing gap and completes the streetscape. The new building fits effortlessly between neighboring buildings, enhancing its presence with quiet confidence.
Inside, the spaces are defined by warm, natural surfaces and a color palette of gray, white, and black, accented with green, red, and brown tones. Acoustic elements made from recycled materials, ensure pleasant sound quality. Tactile, natural materials such as wood, stone, fabric, and glass create a harmonious atmosphere, while exposed and polished concrete surfaces add industrial sophistication.
The new atrium between the existing and new buildings acts as an architectural buffer—granting each structure its individuality, while uniting them as one ensemble. Inside, it serves as a communicative link, characterized by informal, dynamic, and lively zones.
Sustainability is achieved through photovoltaic panels, heat recovery, a heat pump, and underfloor heating. An intelligent building control system optimizes energy use and comfort.
This project demonstrates how progressive design and sustainable construction can form a powerful symbiosis—meeting aesthetic and functional demands while creating an architectural statement that embodies the contemporary urban spirit.
