The project is the first permanent snowboard big air facility in the world. It enjoys the state-of-the-art trail that consists of starting off area, slop, taking off area, judge table, etc., integrating new research results of competitive sports related to big air facility.
The project embodies a close integration of design with the reuse of industrial heritage. Located in the well-known Shougang Park, it’s comprised of the big air jump plarform and supporting facilities that are transformed from the industrial heritage in the cooling tower area. This popular sports venue injects new vitality into the city. Moreover, it’s the first competition venue, whose design completely fuses with industrial heritage reuse and urban renewal, in the history of Winter Olympics.
The design takes into account the possibilities of variable trails. After 2020 Winter Olympics, it can be transformed to meet the needs of holding more relevant trainings and competition events by changing temporary components.
The big air jump platform itself is endowed with the design concept of “flying”, which is the typical image in Dunhuang frescoes, for highlighting an elegant and flowing feeling. On the one hand, the “flying” curve fits with the shape of jump platform; on the other hand, “flying” in Chinese has the same meaning as Big Air: flying to the sky. The Dunhuang “flying” colored ribbon adds recognizable Chinese cultural element into modern sports events. The jump platform and its surrounding area, together with bank along the Yongding River and public spaces, have been reorganized for providing more leisure and sports spaces to the citizens after the Olympics.
