Bicycles Quilicot’s distribution center was created for cycling enthusiasts. As it houses a distribution center, boutique and head office, it was therefore necessary to intelligibly direct the different users, so that they naturally feel guided towards the desired use. Thus, to clearly direct consumers towards the store, a contrast was used. By opting for a relatively opaque main façade, customers are guided towards the transparency present in the contrasting storefront.
However, this choice can also be explained in functional terms. The shape of the lot dictated that a portion of the storage area faces the street, as an abundance of fenestration to this part of the building could create a safety issue. This feature, intrinsic to the function enhanced the building's intelligibility. Then, through the building's assembly, placement, size and form, the project welcomes, protects and supports the activities within the site, taking advantage of the synergy between program elements.
The boutique design was created to allow flexibility and adaptability, integrating the latest digital technologies, and offering the wide variety of a department store while maintaining the characteristics of a neighborhood bike-shop. The bike-wall is the core element of the shop, highlighting 42 bicycles accentuated by backlighting. The design of a grid lighting system is unique. The lighting created from scratch highlights the bicycles inside light boxes as well as the shop, like an exhibition room.
For this project, the creation of custom woodwork was essential to meet the client's needs for modular displays and functional storage. The use of blond wood and black pre-painted perforated steel was carefully selected to reflect the accessible character of the brand. The black color, predominant in the space, soothes the stimulating environment, while emphasizing the products on display. The simplicity of the orange-colored signage reflects Quilicot's branding.
