The Bernoulli School campus in Vale do Sereno inaugurates a research project developed by BCMF Arquitetos on the architecture of learning spaces. Conceived as the first in a series of new campuses for the institution, the project established spatial, constructive, and operational principles that subsequently guided the units in Salvador, Cidade Jardim, and São Paulo. Developed from 2018 onward, the project went through the pandemic and was revised to incorporate new possibilities of use, technological infrastructure, environmental quality, and an expansion of spaces for social interaction and informal learning. Although it was the first to be conceived, it became the last to be completed, as well as the largest and most complex of the projects developed for the Bernoulli Group.
Located on a site of approximately 9,400 m², in Vale do Sereno, between Belo Horizonte and Nova Lima, the campus faces a transverse level difference of nearly 18 meters and approximately 40,000 m² of built area. The implantation organizes the building into a predominantly horizontal volume, in contrast with the residential towers that characterize the surroundings. By occupying the entire block and establishing simultaneous relationships with all the streets that delimit it, the project seeks to create a more permeable urban condition. The different levels allow access points to be naturally distributed, reduce circulation distances, and eliminate the distinction between front and back. The school thus ceases to be an isolated object and instead establishes a continuity between topography, architecture, landscape, and city.
The program is organized into two complementary systems: a horizontal base, which brings together education, sports, culture, and social interaction, and a tower dedicated to the administrative activities of the Bernoulli Education System. Between them, a central circulation core connects the main collective facilities — a 400-seat auditorium, gymnasium, courts, restaurants, terraces, social areas, and parking — and distributes flows among the different levels of the school.
The spatial organization is based on a fundamental premise: learning does not happen only inside the classroom. Movement, informal encounters, moments of permanence, and spontaneous activities are also part of the educational experience. For this reason, circulation assumes an active role within the program. Ramps, stairs, bleachers, voids, walkways, platforms, and terraces form a continuous sequence of spaces that can be appropriated for study, rest, and social interaction. Residual spaces cease to exist; every part of the building participates in the learning experience.
This understanding, present since the project's initial premises, proved even more relevant during the pandemic. The diversity of indoor and outdoor environments, cross ventilation, and the possibility of different forms of interaction, already incorporated into the design, proved particularly suitable to that context. The revision carried out during this period reinforced the role of intermediate spaces and their capacity to accommodate future transformations.
The architecture is structured around four main volumes — the gymnasium, auditorium, administrative tower, and longitudinal school building — articulated through a shared structural grid. The coordination between structure, architecture, installations, and enclosures rationalizes construction and allows future adaptations without altering the spatial organization of the complex. Flexibility, in this sense, does not mean creating generic spaces, but establishing a structure capable of evolving over time.
The same logic guides the materiality. Exposed concrete, glass, expanded metal sheets, sunshades, and aluminum louvers are employed according to the conditions of each façade, combining environmental performance, durability, and architectural expression. Solar protection devices were dimensioned for each orientation, controlling radiation, glare, and thermal load, while preserving natural lighting and the visual relationship with the landscape. Technical infrastructure remains largely exposed, facilitating maintenance, inspection, and future adaptations. Signage, lighting, interiors, and landscaping are conceived as parts of the same system.
The Vale do Sereno campus synthesizes this investigation: a permanent infrastructure for education, yet sufficiently open to accommodate different ways of teaching, learning, and living together. Rather than responding to a specific pedagogical model or a particular historical moment, the building establishes a spatial structure capable of absorbing transformations over time, preserving the clarity of its implantation, constructive precision, and continuity between architecture, landscape, and city.
