In the heart of the city, JD Mall has long been a familiar landmark, bustling with energy and commerce. Yet, as times evolve, so does the need for spaces that do more than just serve their functional purpose – they must inspire, connect, and redefine urban experiences. With this vision in mind, Aedas Global Design Principal Cary Lau has led a striking renovation that breathes new life into JD Mall, turning it into a seamless fusion of art, technology, and interaction.
The biggest challenge of the project lies in its over 20-year history, and to create high-ceiling and entrance within the existing structure requires extensive technical collaboration and structural coordination. The clean and powerful façade blends light and shadow design to create a contemporary atmosphere. The façade’s grid structure symbolises digital pixels, reflecting JD’s advanced technological identity, while also echoing the traditional brick walls of historic architecture. Integrated lighting within the grid, combined with a programmable system, allows the façade to display scrolling messages, enhancing the festive atmosphere.
The three-storey shopping mall is designed with a strong focus on entertainment, social, and leisure spaces. The enhanced circulation with shops and open retail area ensures easy access to various sections, significantly improving overall convenience.
The interior spaces are revitalised to offer a contemporary shopping mall to cater all-aged groups. In the public atrium, the ceiling is adorned with white aluminium panels to brighten the environment, and wood-like fins to embellish the walls. Terrazzo-like flooring and LED lighting complete the aesthetic, providing a welcoming ambiance to visitors. The customer service centre features a glass-mirror ceiling and wood-like panels that harmonise with the overall design, while wood-like artificial tabletops create a warm atmosphere.
Each floor’s public corridors feature distinctive ceiling designs that intuitively guide visitors, enhancing wayfinding and creating a pleasant journey. The retail areas embrace an open layout that fosters interactive experiences and cultivates a vibrant, energetic atmosphere.
‘By seamlessly connecting various spaces and enhancing the overall visiting experience, the JD Mall design is set to be a vibrant and engaging destination. It offers a perfect blend of leisure, entertainment, and convenience, setting a new standard for a modern retail environment.’ Cary shares.
