A cultural centre
on the Aare
The
context of Büren is made up of two essential factors: the site is confined by
the Türmli-school and the river Aare, two important elements
which result in the immediate vicinity of the new construction and call for a
compact building shape.
The
position on the riverside gives the opportunity to create a building that hosts
more than the cultural activities: a neat cultural attraction for the local
population, visible from the timber-bridge and from the opposite bank; a new
identifying landmark in the skyline of the town centre Stedli; a
vibrant riverside architecture. The Stedli draws closer to
the bridge: the building acts as a gathering point in the idyllic river
landscape.
A
unitary building
One of
the main ideas of the project was to conceive a unitary building with a strong
image, clearly recognizable as a building of the community. We chose a clear,
geometrical base shape that conveys presence and unity but not monumentality, a
shape that is adapted to the scale of the town.
The
second guiding idea was to direct the recreation rooms towards East to open
views over the river landscape and to highlight the closeness of the town
centre. From the outside the building acts as an attraction point on the
waterfront.
A transparent
building
The transparent
building sets an urbanistic signal when it lights up in the evening: it
illuminates the whole riverside area and creates a joyful atmosphere, inviting
the citizens to take part in the events.
The transparence of
the cultural centre underlines the permeability of the boundary and opens
enjoyable views on the opulent riverside landscape.
The different
language and materiality of the cultural centre compared with the Türmli school
correspond to our vision of single school buildings risen like individual
pavilions in a park. We picked up this principle of inserting the building in a
park-like setting and developed it in the design of the cultural centre and of
the surrounding landscape. The landscape architecture draws conceptually on the
results of the preliminary test planning. It creates a tension between the
existing school building and the new Aula. A seemingly
massive and closed school building versus a light, filigree and transparent Aula. The
façade structure is made of curved corten stiles that swing between two poles:
a dynamic, modern and expressive construction widely opened on the river
landscape. At the same time, this structure recalls local artisanry: the
constructive principles of traditional timber frame constructions – which take
advantage from the inherent stability of triangular shapes – were reinterpreted
into a filigree structure in keeping with Büren’s houses and bridges.
A versatile
building
Since the building
is meant to house representative events such as meetings, conferences, theater,
concerts and parties, the space must be adaptable for any of these situations.
It is designed as a flexible building, with the highest possible versatility in
the arrangement of the interior spaces. Thanks to a sliding wall system, one
can generate different configurations of space, corresponding to the different
uses: by sliding the wall, the capacity of the 400 seat hall can be reduced to
250 seats; it is also possible to retract completely all sliding panels to
connect the hall and the foyer to a single open space: the 560 qm can be
used for cultural exhibitions and bazaars. The room splitting panels are
covered with a special facing, which guarantees a reliable acoustic absorption
and a favorable reverberation time, and which is therefore perfectly adapted
for large conference and concert halls.
The incisive
element of the foyer is the open stair leading to the roof-terrace. It is the
place to be on a nice summer evening, between two representations, enjoying the
relaxing view over the riverside landscape.
Functional
description
The entrance to the
cultural centre is located under the overhanging roof in the direction of the
existing school. From the riverside promenade you can reach it through a path
along the building façade. The entrance leads directly to the foyer. The
building is divided in two sections: on one side the recreation spaces facing
the Aare – foyer, ticket office and the flexible hall; on the other side the
functional spaces – cloakroom, WCs, catering kitchen and storage rooms for the
sliding panels. The functional area also includes the stage and its storage
spaces as well as the changing and rehearsal rooms at the second floor level.
The delivery access is located on the Weidweg: it is screened
from the riverside by a row of trees and offers sufficient place to reverse. As
intended in the overall planning documents, the parking spaces are located
along the Aarbergstrasse. New trees are playfully inserted between
the spaces, making it airier and less compact, suggesting a park. The Kocher-Büetiger house
which is worth to be protected gets anew green strip without parking spaces.
The playground in front of the school is redesigned with a new uniform pavement
and bicycle stands. With those elements and the canopy along the new building
the schoolyard gets a new, consistent design.
