Urban Design Group led the systems modernization of Baltimore City’s World Trade Center, transforming the modernist landmark into a sustainable icon through the integration of an innovative geothermal system that leverages Inner Harbor waters. The project navigated the challenges of a tight waterfront site, complex environmental conditions, and coordination with multiple agencies, all while preserving the building’s architectural legacy. By carefully adapting geothermal technology to the urban harbor context, the design reduced conventional energy reliance, lowered operating costs, and extended the building’s life. The modernization also strengthened public engagement by maintaining access to the waterfront promenade, ensuring that sustainability is both functional and visible. The completed project unites technical innovation, civic interaction, and architectural preservation, securing the tower’s continued prominence as a vital Inner Harbor anchor.
