Combined with the main station’s “sailing boat” and the auxiliary station’s “crescent moon” design concepts, the project shapes a maritime cultural image and a spiritual landmark.
The main station takes the sail, which reflects Haikou’s maritime spirit, as the design prototype. With the meaning of “setting sail”, it symbolizes embarking on a new journey and achieving great undertakings, conveying Haikou’s spirit of forging ahead bravely through the Qiongzhou Strait. In terms of form design, the necessary stairs for maintenance personnel are embedded between two hollow triangular frames, which stand overlapping to present the aesthetic rhythm of the structure itself.
The appearance of the auxiliary station is designed with the “crescent moon” as the creative intention, creating the artistic conception of “the bright moon rising above the sea”. It subtly and poetically conveys the shape of the crescent moon through an anthropomorphic approach, transforming the single-function radar tower into a mimetic structure standing by the sea, forming a simple and elegant basic form relationship. The two “moon slices” serve as the spatial structure, connected by stairs in between, and supporting rooms are set at the base.
For the exterior surface of the buildings, the main station adopts fair-faced concrete, creating unique and excellent aesthetic expressions such as strength, durability, cleanliness and material texture; the auxiliary station adopts white UHPC external hanging panels, which form an overall hyperboloid effect through the splicing of small triangular pieces, featuring excellent weather resistance and a delicate texture.
