The Project consisted in the refurbishment of a small apartment with 80m2 in Lisbon’s city centre in a functional and sympathetic space, adequate to the needs of who would dwell in it.
The main goal of the project was the demand for optimization of all areas in a simple functional scheme that answered the owner’s needs, preserving and framing all existing elements in the new solutions.
The bathroom and kitchen were totally refurbished, the area of the former existing interior bedroom was reused in equal parts either to create a closet/lobby to access the main bedroom either to increase the living room area.
In order to counteract the appearance of old and darkness that the house exhibited, 2 artificial skylights were designed along the corridor (1 in front of each junction of doors) in order to break the effect of a long tunnel simulating this way a natural light environment.
Relatively to the floor, we chose to recover the existing wooden floors in all areas except bathroom, marquise and kitchen, where the existing mosaic was replaced by traditional but restyled hydraulic mosaic in order to better withstand moisture and humidity.
As a final result we think we’ve reached a functional and practical house, where despite the compartmentalization and function of each space is easily identifiable, living and transition between different spaces turned out to be quite fluid. To help achieve this same fluidity, all expendable doors were removed.
