Chioco Design was tasked with designing their headquarters in South Austin with connectivity to bike trails, green space and many options for dining and entertainment. The program includes a 5,000 square foot Wellness and Welcoming Center on the ground floor and 105,000 square feet of offices, open workspace, conference rooms, break rooms and lounges on two floor plates of the four-story mixed-use building.
We approached this project by incorporating hospitality driven design characteristics. The Wellness and Welcoming Center is where new employees and visitors check in with the
reception staff in a comfortable lounge setting. This space sets the tone for the workplace. Thought of as an amenity for the employees, one could book an appointment with a wellness coordinator or schedule time in the sauna or the hot and cold plunge pools, massage chairs, or one of the three quiet rooms meant for meditation and relaxation.
The main break room/lounge was designed to be a destination where employees could not only join each other for a meal but also use it as an informal workspace or meeting space. It has elements of a hotel lobby, restaurant and bar with lush plantings, an abundance of natural light and well-appointed furniture and lighting. It includes a large Koi Pond with aquatic plantings and a gently falling water feature further enhancing the incorporation of natural elements.
We integrated this design theme throughout. Open workspaces were scaled down and broken up using custom metal screens and planters. The perforated metal screens form soft, curving layered planes that offer some privacy but still maintain sightlines.
Early and thorough programming efforts with department leaders ensure a successful and efficient layout for a projected one thousand employees over the next five years.
